The UnSchool of Disruptive Design

LEARN HOW TO MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE PLANET FROM THE UNEP CHAMPION OF THE EARTH, DR. LEYLA ACAROGLU

WHO WE ARE

We are a global experimental knowledge lab for creative rebels and change agents who want to activate their agency and help redesign the world so THAT it works better for all of us.

We support emerging leaders, established professionals, and career shifters from all industries with learning systems for positive impact that maximize social, economic, and environmental sustainability.

The experiences we design activate transformative learning that enhances reflective, critical, and systems thinking perspectives as fundamental tools required to participate in changing the world.

We do this through leveraging an understanding of the complex interconnected systems in the world in designed experiences that maximize positive change.

UNSCHOOL KNOWLEDGE PILLARS

EMBEDDED IN THE heart of all UnSchool INITIATIVEs are our three core knowledge pillars of SYSTEMS, SUSTAINABILITY, and DESIGN

SYSTEMS

Understanding and working within the multilevel perspectives that systems thinking enables is fundamental not only to making change, but also to be an active participant in the world and to design a future that we all want to live in.

Earth's natural systems provide every living thing with the resources needed to exist, and thus it is fundamental to meet our needs within the opportunities and limitations that the Earth has.

Industrial systems work tirelessly to manufacture the needs of our desires. These intersect with nature as we obtain the raw materials required to make the products we all use. The industrial system brings all the wonderful tools of modernity at the expense of the natural systems that we need to survive.

Complex social systems subtly govern human society, from education to government and everything in between. Social systems are emergent outcomes of our collective desires for success as a species.

SUSTAINABILITY

The ability to sustain life on Earth requires us to work within the systems that nature evolved, along with the human-formed social and industrial systems.

We all rely on natural systems that sustain us. No one can opt out of breathing, eating, or drinking, so we are all implicated in figuring out how humanity can be a generative force on our shared planet.

The fundamental quest of our time is to transform our global society from a linear system that creates value loss and waste, to a circular one built on on regeneration, sustainability, and value gain.

The knowledge and power we have acquired through industrial and technical revolutions have formed a tension between nature and needs.

We can meet these needs within the laws of nature if we have the tools to understand, participate, and contribute more than we take.

DESIGN

Design is the silent social scripture that surrounds us at all times; it influences our lives from the moment we are born until the day we die.

Design is the formation of materials found in nature into usable goods required and desired by humans in order to meet our needs.

The current global condition is to over-exploit and undervalue raw materials and formed goods that are created in this industrial system.

From the foundational perspective of design, we can reconfigure value to work within the natural systems that are required to sustain life on Earth.

We can design goods and services that not only meet human needs and desires, but that also add value back and support the regeneration of systems.

The world is made up of complex interconnected and interdependent systems made of billions of individual and interconnected parts that form the magical whole that we are all a part of

WHAT WE DO

We offer immersive programs that pop up around the world and live online, an extensive online school, and three certification tracks for advanced learning.

Our programs focus around The Disruptive Design Method, which supports a process of creative changemaking to enable systems levels change.

We approach everything we do and teach from a problem-loving growth mindset. The foundational tools we teach are applied systems thinking, life cycle thinking, sustainability sciences, and creative ideation, to support more problem lovers (not avoiders!) that are taking action to make a positive impact on the planet.

Along with our core knowledge pillars, we teach leadership and communication skills, offer professional development through our certification system, and develop tools that help others facilitate positive change through their work.

THE ICEBERG MODEL IS

WE HELP PEOPLE LIKE YOU UNDERSTAND SYSTEMS THINKING, LEARN TO LOVE PROBLEMS, ADVANCE SUSTAINABILITY, ACTIVE THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY AND PROVIDE TRANSFORMATIVE LEANING EXPERIENCES SO WE CAN DESIGN A FUTURE THAT WORKS BETTER THAN TODAY.

HOW WE DO IT

Our programs encourage people from diverse professional backgrounds to reorient the way they perceive and act in the world in order to maximize their capacity to affect positive social change. At the UnSchool, you will engage with storytelling, challenge, and play as catalysts for rapid knowledge transfer, community building, and personal activation.

As emerging leaders and established professionals, you will rapidly up-skill in designing interventions for social innovation. Our programs use a unique approach to changemaking through the Disruptive Design Method and are designed for purpose-driven leaders, agitators, and passionate communicators who want to participate in solving and evolving planetary problems.

The UnSchool exists to help fill the knowledge/action gap that exists between knowing there are problems in the world and having the mental models and skill sets required to actively intervene and design solutions.

We work with established and aspiring creative rebels, change pioneers, activators, entrepreneurs, and everyone in between who has a deep-seated passion to make a positive and meaningful impact through everything that they do.

WHY WE DO IT

The world needs as many humans as possible to activate their agency and to participate in addressing the world’s complex problems; from climate change to inequity, hyper-consumption, ocean plastic waste to food waste, there are many things we can work on to support the sustainability of our beautiful shared planet Earth.

The UnSchool is designed to help people activate agency, to provide the thinking and doing tools that create change, and to be an active part of contributing to a future that works better for all of us. We support emerging and established leaders advancing their changemaking skills so that the we can be at the forefront of transitioning to a circular, sustainable, and regenerative future.

Everyone who comes to the UnSchool has a shared desire to contribute to the type of future that works better for all of us. They are creative rebels, pioneers, designers, thinkers, doers, activators, engineers, entrepreneurs, and everyone in between who has a deep-seated passion to make a positive impact through what they do.
