Sustainability provocateur Dr. Leyla Acaroglu challenges people to think differently about how the world works. As an award winning designer, sociologist, and entrepreneur, she developed the Disruptive Design Method and designs cerebrally activating experiences, gamified toolkits, and unique educational experiences that help people make the status quo obsolete. Her mainstage TED talk on sustainability has been viewed over a 1.2 million times, and she leads presentations around the world on activating positive social change through creative interventions.
As a designer, her works such as Design Play Cards, Game Changer Game, Secret Life of Things, Designercise, and the AIGA Gender Equity Toolkit, are at the forefront of activated experience design. She has authored several handbooks for change makers and continues to agitate for new ways of solving complex social problems through beautifully designed interventions. Leyla’s creative work is highly acclaimed, being featured in a permanent exhibition in the Leonardo di Vinci museum in Milan and earning commissions from the National Gallery of Victoria.
Leyla was named Champion of the Earth by the United Nations Environment Program in 2016.
Afroz Shah, is an Indian lawyer from Mumbai, with a passion for the oceans having initiated the world’s largest beach clean-up project.
In October 2015, Shah and his neighbor Harbansh Mathur, an 84-year-old who has since passed away, were frustrated with the piles of decomposing waste that had washed up and completely overwhelmed the city’s Versova beach. Determined to do something about it, the pair started cleaning up the beach themselves, one piece of rubbish at a time.
Every weekend since, Shah has inspired volunteers to join him – from slum-dwellers to Bollywood stars, from schoolchildren to politicians. They have been turning up at Versova for what Shah calls "a date with the ocean", but what in reality means labouring shin-deep in rotting garbage under the scorching Indian sun.
Afroz was named Champion of the Earth by the United Nations Environment Program in 2016.

Yes, you do. We require you to be all-in for our programs, which means being available for the full duration and in the appropriate city. The fellowship is designed to activate leadership and we have invited mentors to work with the group throughout the week. As the week progresses, your learnings will build upon prior lessons, so it's important not to miss any. You'll also have projects and real-world client challenges that require teamwork and full commitment. You should plan to block your schedule out and to be available for the fellowship from 9AM to 9PM most days (we schedule some downtime too!). You apply by completing the application (yep!). After the deadline, our selection commitee assesses applications. We offer fellowships to an exclusive group of between 16 and 20 fellows. Selection is based on a range of criteria and we work hard to select cohorts with a range of experiences and backgrounds (both personal and professional). Our previous fellowships have included people from 12 countries (with applications from over 32 countries!), across industries and professions– from artists to architects, product designers to piano players!

I'VE ALREADY APPLIED AND WAS NOT ACCEPTED, CAN I APPLY AGAIN? . . .
Of course! If at first you don't succeed, pick yourself up and try again! We get overwhelmed by applications, which is a great thing as it means we have incredible cohorts. If you don't get in the first time, we encourage you to apply for our next program or to consider on of ourother program otpions.
WHAT DO THE MENTORS DO? . . .
We invite a selection of established leaders to provide in-depth workshops during the week, alongside our core knowledge pillars. In addition to local mentors, we invite some mentors from other countries to join us for part of the week.
